The 10 Worst Foods to Feed Your Pet

The 10 Worst Foods to Feed Your Pet

It’s that time of the month where we provide some handy tips and tricks to keep your pet in tip top shape.

The topic for this month is… food!

Dog’s might LOVE to eat everything, but there are some foods that are best when they stay out of their bellies.

Here’s 10 Foods to avoid giving to your pet, as they’re surprisingly dangerous when consumed.

1. Avocado

Avocados might be a superfood for humans, but dogs struggle to digest it. So it is best if they skip that morning avo on toast.

2. Citrus Fruit

Have you seen that viral video of a dog being fed a lemon? Citrus fruits like lemons contain citric acid. This causes irritation and swelling in your dog’s mouth and throat and should be avoided at all costs. Sorry Nan! No Lemon Cake for Buddy today.

3. Grapes & Raisins

Believe it or not, grapes and raisins are a big no-no for dogs. With the potential to cause serious health implications (from even minor amounts), it’s best to keep these out of your dogs reach.

4. Nuts

Another food to keep out of your dog's diet are nuts. Great for humans, terrible for dogs.  These small tasty rocks can cause pancreatitis and vomiting/diarrhoea due to the high amount of fats and oils present. Ouch!

5. Cooked Bones

Unlike bones processed by pet food companies, cooked bones can splinter and get stuck in your dog's digestive tract, meaning it’s best to debone any meat before thinking about giving it to your dog.

6. Xylitol

Xyli-what? Xylitol is a natural sugar substitute which can be found in some forms of candy, gum and diet foods. This can cause your dog’s blood sugar to drop which threatens the risk of liver failure. It’s best to keep the gumdrops away from your precious pooch.

7. Garlic

Even though Garlic Bread is one of the best creations alive, that doesn’t mean it’s good for everyone. Garlic has been found to kill red blood cells in dogs, causing anaemia. Eating a lot, even just once has the ability to poison.

8. Dairy Products

Although a Puppuccino seems like a good treat, too much dairy can cause stomach issues for dogs so it’s best to keep any form of dairy away from your pet.

9. Plums

As humans, we know not to eat the pits of plums and peaches, however dogs do not know this. These pits contain cyanide which is poisonous to both humans and dogs.

10. Yeast Dough

Before bread is baked, it needs to rise. This is exactly what would happen in your dog’s stomach when eaten. The dough begins to swell, which stretches the abdomen causing discomfort and pain.

So there we have it, 10 foods that are best kept outside of your dog’s belly. Now that you know what not to give them, it’s time to feed food that they love in style with our Brooklyn Tuff Bowls.
